From Volunteer to Valued Employee: Yvonne’s PATH to Employment

Yvonne smiling while holding a decorated wreath inside a greenhouse.Yvonne came to the Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! PATH program with one goal: to find meaningful work that would support her and her daughter. After four months without employment and a difficult experience in her last job, she was ready for something different and fulfilling.

During that time, Yvonne had been volunteering 20 hours a week at a local gardening and landscaping shop. Her time there brought her genuine joy and a sense of purpose. It didn’t take long for her PATH Case Manager to see the opportunity.

With their encouragement, Yvonne approached the shop to ask about a paid position and was hired on the spot.

“The program taught me to go after my passion,” Yvonne said. “My PATH Case Manager encouraged me to seek employment at the greenhouse I was volunteering at because I enjoyed it.”

Thanks to the PATH program, Yvonne turned her passion into employment. She’s now earning income doing something she loves, while gaining valuable business skills in a supportive environment. She feels empowered, confident, and motivated for what’s ahead.

Yvonne is not only helping prepare the greenhouse for its upcoming opening, but also taking steps toward greater independence and stability. Her story is a reminder that when people are supported in pursuing their interests, they thrive.
