When Trevor started his apprenticeship with Power Solutions, he knew he was choosing a path that would provide real-world experience and financial stability. Unlike a traditional classroom setting, he spends his days in the field, gaining hands-on training while earning a solid paycheck.
“This program is setting me up for long-term success as an electrician,” Trevor said. “I’m already earning a good income and getting ahead without taking on student debt.”
A big part of his success comes from mentorship. Jerry, an experienced electrician, has helped Trevor grow both technically and professionally, teaching him not just electrical skills but also critical thinking, problem-solving, and efficiency. Learning from a seasoned professional every day has given Trevor the kind of real-world knowledge that a classroom alone can’t provide.
Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Hands-On Experience
Despite his dedication, Trevor faced early challenges. Without access to a National Electrical Code (NEC) book, he struggled to fully grasp industry regulations, making it harder to apply his training on the job. Thankfully, Michigan Works! stepped in, providing him with the necessary tools and resources to continue learning. “That support made a huge impact on my ability to grow as an apprentice,” he said.
Now, six months into his apprenticeship, Trevor has already worked on major electrical projects, including installations at Jinya Ramen Bar. He’s gained valuable experience in reading blueprints, installing conduits, and managing commercial wiring—each project sharpening his skills and preparing him for a long-term career. Beyond technical expertise, he’s learned the importance of adaptability, planning ahead, and thinking creatively on the job site.
Trevor’s goal is to complete his apprenticeship and earn his journeyman electrician license. “This apprenticeship has been a game changer for me, and I’m excited to keep building my future in this trade,” he said.
