Beginning a career in the electrical industry comes with more than the challenge of learning a skilled trade. The cost of tools, work clothes, training materials, and other necessities can also create barriers for someone just getting started.
For Alex, support from Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! helped make that transition easier. Through the organization’s partnership with Power Solutions Group, Alex is gaining hands-on experience as part of the company’s registered apprenticeship program while working toward becoming a journeyman electrician.
Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! provided Alex with an electrical code book and supported his classroom training, helping him stay on track as he works toward completing his apprenticeship.
Since beginning the program, Alex has developed his understanding of electrical tools, wiring, and electrical systems, with a strong focus on workplace safety. He has also learned to complete tasks more independently, troubleshoot problems on the job, and work closely with his team.
Alex has also learned to navigate the more challenging parts of the trade, from mastering complex electrical math and concepts to adjusting to physically demanding work and troubleshooting problems when the cause isn’t immediately clear. Difficult days have reinforced the importance of asking questions, taking responsibility, checking his work, and never rushing at the expense of safety.
With support from Power Solutions Group and Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works!, Alex continues to build the knowledge, confidence, and practical experience needed for a lasting career in the electrical industry.
