On-the-Job Training Powers Cameron’s Career Transition

Cameron smiles at the camera while standing in front of a bright red staircase. After 10 years with a large automotive manufacturer, Cameron was laid off and unsure where his career would take him next. With support from Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! and an on-the-job training opportunity, he successfully transitioned into a new career in boat manufacturing.

Cameron connected with Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! after attending a Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) meeting. Through career exploration and assessment, our team learned more about his mechanical aptitude, organizational skills, and experience supporting engineering and prototype development.

His background had also given him valuable hands-on experience with real-world projects, technical drawings, and detailed documentation. Cameron understood the importance of maintaining clear, accurate records so projects could be evaluated, adjusted, and improved over time. He was also experienced in working with engineers, technicians, and supervisors to solve problems and meet project goals.

These transferable skills helped Cameron move beyond the automotive industry and begin building a new career with Sunsation Products, a longstanding family-owned boat manufacturer that produces high-performance center-console boats.

Through on-the-job training, Cameron has continued developing his technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and commitment to quality craftsmanship. Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! also purchased tools he needed for his new position, helping remove a barrier as he entered a different trade.

Cameron’s experience, adaptability, and willingness to embrace a new opportunity helped him turn an unexpected job loss into a promising new career path. He’s continuing to build his skills and confidence while working toward long-term success in a career he finds rewarding.
