Lakisha never imagined how much an apprenticeship could change her life. She initially thought she would be training as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), eager to gain skills that would provide job security. What she didn’t expect was just how many doors this opportunity would open.
“As a single woman, I had been juggling two part-time jobs,” Lakisha shared. “When I found out how much I’d be earning in my apprenticeship, it felt like I’d won the lottery! I was finally able to work one full-time job with a solid wage.”
Financial stability was just one of the benefits of Lakisha’s apprenticeship. She also received critical support from Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! (MSC-MW), particularly from Victoria, a career specialist who ensured she had the resources she needed to succeed.
“She made sure I had everything I needed—stipends for gas, uniforms, car repairs, and books,” Lakisha said. This additional assistance helped her stay focused on her training and complete her coursework without financial stress.
Her employer also played a key role in her success, providing wages for the hours she spent in school and offering a tuition assistance program. This support allowed Lakisha to continue her education while gaining real-world experience in her field. Now, with just six more courses remaining in her associate degree, she is already thinking about the future and hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the college of her choice.
Looking back, Lakisha sees this apprenticeship as a life-changing experience and encourages others to take advantage of similar opportunities.
“The skills you gain will stay with you for life, and no one can take them away,” she said. “It might be uncomfortable at first, but if you stick with it, you’ll be so glad you did. You never know where it might take you!”
