Driving Toward a Career in the Skilled Trades

Blake standing in a training lot with a semi-truck and traffic cones during CDL trainingBlake came to Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! with a clear goal: build a stable career and work toward an apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 17. Like many young adults, he faced challenges getting started, including limited credentials and work experience. Even so, he stayed focused on what he wanted for his future.

Through the Young Professionals program, Blake explored his options and began building the skills he needed to move forward. He participated in workshops, practiced interviewing, and worked closely with staff to better understand career pathways in the skilled trades. Along the way, he demonstrated strong math and problem-solving skills that helped guide his next steps.

As he explored training opportunities, Blake identified earning his CDL-A as an important step toward his long-term goals. With guidance from Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works!, he enrolled in a training program that aligned with union recommendations and positioned him for future apprenticeship opportunities. Financial support removed a major barrier, allowing him to focus fully on completing the program.

Blake began training in March 2026 and quickly found his stride. He stayed engaged, communicated regularly with staff, and put in the work needed to succeed. He completed his CDL-A coursework with a perfect score and prepared for his final road test in April, marking a major step forward toward a career in the skilled trades.

Reflecting on his experience, Blake shared:

“I would like to sincerely thank Michigan Works! for providing me with the opportunity to pursue my CDL. Your support and guidance have made a meaningful difference in helping me take this important step toward a better career. I truly appreciate the resources and encouragement you’ve given me throughout this process, and I’m grateful for the chance to build a stronger future because of it.”

Blake’s story shows how the right support, combined with determination and a clear goal, can help young professionals take meaningful steps toward a career that fits their future.
