After 11 years of service in the United States Navy, Shamar relocated from Virginia to Michigan, ready to begin his transition into civilian life. Throughout his time in the Navy, Shamar developed extensive technical skills in mechanical and electrical work related to aircraft ordnance systems. His responsibilities included managing supplies, troubleshooting equipment, and ensuring readiness for high-stakes missions.
Transitioning from military service to civilian employment came with challenges, including identifying a career path that matched both his experience and long-term goals. Prior to moving, Shamar earned a Climate Control Technology Certification, which sparked his interest in HVAC work. After moving, he connected with Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! to explore training and support that could help him strengthen those skills and gain confidence in a new field.
Through the Barrier Removal Employment Success (BRES) program, Shamar received supportive services to help him move forward in his career change. With assistance from our staff, he received career guidance and funding to purchase the HVAC tools and work boots required for his new role. This support allowed him to step into an On-the-Job Training (OJT) opportunity with a local employer, where he could apply his technical background directly in the field.
In his training position, Shamar quickly impressed his employer with the knowledge he gained in his certification program, along with the discipline and adaptability he developed in the Navy. He quickly advanced into an HVAC Installation Technician role, growing his skill set and his new career.
Shamar’s story highlights the resilience and adaptability that many veterans bring to the civilian workforce. With determination and support, he transformed his military experience into a new career path with long-term opportunity. His successful transition shows how targeted training, tools, and employer collaboration can help veterans build a strong foundation after their service.
