The Power of Persistence

After graduating high school, she gained experience in retail and restaurant roles, but personal challenges left her searching for a more meaningful and stable career path. Caring for her sick grandfather, and being continually recognized for her nurturing personality, sparked her interest in the healthcare field.

Through counseling with her career planner, Denysha determined that earning her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential would be an ideal first step toward a career in healthcare. However, just as she was prepared to start her training program, she unexpectedly had to move out of the area. Rather than abandoning her goals, she identified a school closer to her new home and, with the help of Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works!, began her CNA training in June.

After completing her coursework and preparing for her state examinations, Denysha faced a new challenge: she was unemployed and unable to afford the exam fees. Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! stepped in, providing supportive services to cover the cost. In October, Denysha passed her exams and officially became a licensed CNA, an achievement recognized with a program incentive.

With her new credentials, Denysha worked with Young Professionals staff to update and strengthen her resume, quickly securing her first CNA position. Although the role was not the right fit, she remained resilient and found another job just two days later. With additional support for her uniform, she was ready to begin her new role with Eaton County Health & Rehabilitation Services, earning $18.50 per hour.

Though still early in her journey, Denysha is thriving in her new position and proud of the dedication that brought her here. She faced many moments when giving up felt easier, but she pushed forward, relying on her strength, resilience, and persistence to reach success.
