Recent high school graduates from Macomb County took a big step toward their future careers in healthcare through the Summer Lab Immersion program. This initiative is a unique partnership between Joint Venture Hospital Labs (JVHL), Oakland University, and Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! Young Professionals.
Eight young adults interested in healthcare careers participated in this week-long program, designed to give them a firsthand look at high-demand local jobs in the healthcare field.
The experience began with a three-day preparatory course at Oakland University’s School of Health Sciences. During this time, students learned essential skills they’d need before stepping into a professional lab environment, such as microscopy, pipetting, and a comprehensive safety orientation.
Following training, each participant was strategically paired with one of four JVHL hospital affiliate labs—McLaren Macomb, McLaren Oakland, Henry Ford Main, or Henry Ford West Bloomfield. They spent 40 hours job shadowing experienced laboratory professionals. Acting as “Diagnostic Detectives,” the students observed life-saving diagnostic testing in action.
The hands-on experience gained through the Summer Lab Immersion program was invaluable. It helped these young professionals better understand the career path of a Medical or Clinical Lab Technician and make more informed decisions about their future in healthcare.
The Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! Young Professionals program continues to support youth and young adults up to age 24. It provides opportunities to explore careers, gain experience, and prepare for the workforce.
