What is Pre-Apprenticeship?
A pre-apprenticeship program is designed to prepare individuals to enter and succeed in a Registered Apprenticeship Program or job. Classes teach foundational skills, and hands-on experience helps you learn about the job by trying it.

Medical Assistant Pre-Apprenticeship Program
This program will prepare eligible individuals between the ages of 18-24 who reside in Macomb or St. Clair counties to enter a Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship or similar work-based learning opportunity. Upon successful completion, students will receive the knowledge and experience they need to enter a new and exciting career field, including:
- 10 credit hours at Macomb Community College
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification
- Heartsaver First Aid Certification
- Hands-on experience
- Industry-led workplace tours
- Interview(s) for a Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship Program
A limited number of spots are available.
How to Apply
1. Click the “Apply Now” button to fill out and submit the pre-apprenticeship application.
2. Check your email! A Michigan Works! Staff Member will reach out via email within two business days with a link to complete Kuder Journey career planning assessments.
3. Schedule and attend Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) testing with a Michigan Works! Staff Member. Learn more about the CASAS test here.
4. Schedule and attend an interview/career planning meeting with Michigan Works! staff.
After your interview: You will be notified by May 1st, 2023 if you are selected for the pre-apprenticeship program, and provided timeframes to complete Michigan Works! registration.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Medical Assistant Pre-Apprenticeship Program is provided at no cost.
- All tuition and fees for Macomb Community College Medical Assistant core classes (pre-requisites).
- Support services for participants experiencing barriers to remaining in training. Support Services may include, but are not limited to, books, school supplies, and transportation assistance.
- Tutoring services to assist with homework and assignments
Individuals must be between the ages of 18-24 who reside in Macomb or St. Clair counties. Participants must have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate or be able to obtain one before September 2023. Participants must be available during scheduled times for class, lab, hands-on experiences, and interview days.
All four steps must be completed before May 1st, 2023.
Selected participants will we contacted to complete the registration process with Michigan Works! and Macomb Community College.

- Attendance at classes and work experience is mandatory and required for successful program completion.

- Industry-led workplace tours and apprenticeship interviews will take place between July 15th and August 12th.
No, you are not required to enter an apprenticeship at program completion. However, if you are interested in becoming a Medical Assistant, we highly recommend it as a way to earn a paycheck while you learn the job. If interested, we will help facilitate interviews for registered apprenticeship programs. Offers of apprenticeship are via employer/industry selection.
