For Matthew, becoming an electrician wasn’t just a career decision, it was a way to do what he loves. He’s always enjoyed working with his hands and saw a clear need in the trades.
“I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, and there’s a real demand for electricians,” he said.
Before joining the program, Matthew faced a familiar pressure. “In school, there’s this push to go to college, and trades are often looked down on—as if only unintelligent people choose that path,” he shared. But Matthew trusted his instincts and followed a different route.
Through his apprenticeship, he’s gained important skills like running conduit, wiring complex systems, and operating lifts. Working with his mentor Mike has helped him grow even faster.
“Mike is outstanding. He doesn’t just correct my mistakes—he challenges me to understand them, learn from them, and get better,” Matthew said.
Mike sees mentorship as a way to give apprentices like Matthew the confidence and tools they need to grow. “Mentorship shortens the learning curve and accelerates growth,” he explained. “I wish this kind of training was available when I was learning the trade.”
Now, Matthew is focused on earning his journeyman license, becoming a foreman, and being known as one of the best electricians in his field.
“It’s a fun challenge that has made me a better electrician and person,” he said.
