Building Opportunity Through Apprenticeship: A Manufacturing Success Story

Ken operating a machine in a manufacturing facility as part of his apprenticeship journeyWhen Rocktech Systems’ senior leadership attended a Race to Talent event hosted by the Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! apprenticeship team in January 2025, they were exploring the possibility of developing an apprenticeship program but weren’t sure how to begin. The event provided clarity on the process and available resources, and gave Rocktech the information they needed to move forward.

In the months following the event, the Michigan Works! apprenticeship team worked closely with Rocktech to establish a machinist apprenticeship program. Once the required documentation was approved, Rocktech posted the opportunity for their first apprentice.

Ken, an internal employee who has been with Rocktech since April 2022, expressed interest in the program. He began his career with the company as a second-shift operator, loading and unloading parts on a conveyor. Over time, he worked closely with the lathe supervisor and demonstrated a strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn, making him a strong candidate for the apprenticeship.

However, there was one challenge. Ken didn’t have his high school diploma, which is required to enter the apprenticeship program. Rather than stepping away from the opportunity, he stayed focused and took action to move forward.

With support from both the Michigan Works! adult career planning team and Rocktech, Ken connected with an adult education program at Warren Woods and registered for summer courses. He also adjusted his work schedule to attend classes.

Ken approached his coursework with determination, knowing that completing his high school equivalency would allow him to continue toward his goal. Through hard work and persistence, he successfully met the requirement and registered for classes at Macomb Community College for the fall semester.

Today, Ken is continuing his journey toward becoming a registered apprentice while balancing work and education. His story highlights the role apprenticeship programs can play in helping individuals advance within their current workplace while overcoming barriers. It also reflects how employer support and partnership with Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! can create clear pathways for long-term career growth.
