Nicholas came to Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! after experiencing a layoff from his job as a tire repairer and changer. He had been unemployed for months and wasn’t having much luck finding work on his own.
At first, Nicholas was interested in earning a Carpentry certificate. After talking with his career planner, he learned about a different training opportunity that might be a better fit. The Heavy Equipment Operator program offers hands-on training and certifications for operating a wide variety of construction vehicles. After exploring his options, Nicholas decided to enroll. He completed the program at the Detroit Training Center and earned his certificate in July 2025.
With training under his belt, Nicholas started applying for jobs. He connected with Joe, a Business Services Professional at Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works!, who helped him find an interview with a cement paving company. The company had already filled its heavy equipment operator position, but they offered Nicholas a role as a cement laborer. It was a good place to start, but Nicholas knew he wanted more.
He followed up with his career planner, who encouraged him to look into public works and road commission jobs. Nicholas took that advice and applied for an opening with the Bloomfield Township Department of Public Works. The interview went well, and he was hired as an Operator 3. He’s now making $27.50 per hour, with overtime pay and full benefits, including retirement contributions and the opportunity to earn his CDL-A license at no cost.
Nicholas is a great example of what’s possible with the right support and determination. By taking the time to explore new career paths and complete training, he found a job he’s proud of and a future with real potential.
