When Shining Star Pre-School attended Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works!’ inaugural Race to Talent event in July 2024, they were looking for new ways to support their staff and strengthen their workforce. After learning about Registered Apprenticeships and the opportunities available through the Early Childhood Education (ECE) initiative, the organization committed to investing in both their employees and their long-term growth.
In September 2024, Kayla began her journey as an Early Childhood Education apprentice. From the start, she demonstrated strong commitment and professionalism, completing program requirements within the expected timeline and standing out among her peers. She became the first apprentice in the program to earn both her Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and her U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) apprenticeship designation.
For Shining Star Pre-School, the apprenticeship model provides a structured way to develop talent from within. By combining on-the-job learning with formal training, the program helps build skills, increase confidence, and create a clear path for advancement within the organization.
Kayla’s success also reflects the value of having clear career goals and access to continued education. She has taken the next step by enrolling in a second apprenticeship program, working toward certification as an Early Childhood Program Director through Macomb Community College. Her long-term goal is to grow into a leadership role at Shining Star Pre-School.

Throughout her journey, Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! has supported both Kayla and Shining Star Pre-School by connecting them with training opportunities, program guidance and funding resources. Support through the National Apprenticeship Fund, in partnership with Jobs for the Future, has helped make continued training and advancement possible.
In May 2025, Kayla faced an unexpected setback when a car accident left her without reliable transportation. Through her connection with Michigan Works!, she learned about scholarship opportunities and applied for additional support. The funding helped offset essential expenses, allowing her to stay focused on both her job and apprenticeship responsibilities.
Kayla credits the apprenticeship pathway as a key factor in her progress.
“Evylon from Michigan Works! has been incredibly helpful throughout this entire process. Her support has made a huge difference, and I feel like every accomplishment is celebrated.”
This partnership between employer, apprentice and workforce system highlights how Registered Apprenticeships create opportunities for both businesses and individuals. For employers, it offers a way to build and retain a skilled workforce. For participants, it provides a clear path to advancement, credentials and long-term career growth.
