Skill Improvement Leads to Employment

Crystal Tibble

A participant of the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), Crystal Tibble had two placements offering experiences in filling, data entry and record keeping. Crystal, however, was looking to gain more experience working directly with people in a customer service setting while improving her computer skills.

The perfect placement for her was the Employment Services (ES) section of Michigan Works! While gaining additional experiences interacting with the public, Crystal was a valuable assistant to ES staff and customers in the Port Huron Career Center. She was a greeter and receptionist at the front desk, she facilitated log ins and registrations for job seekers on the computers and Crystal supported staff with general office duties.

With 6 months of experience and new skills, Crystal began her own job search. She participated in the workshops offered at the Career Center and ES staff helped tweak her résumé and drilled her on interview questions.

The ES staff hated to see her leave but are thrilled that Crystal is now employed as a receptionist with a local insurance company. Crystal notes, “I would recommend the SCSEP program to anyone who wants to brush up on skills and get back into the workplace. This program has taught me responsibility, reliability, and how to work better with others.”
